Here’s an interesting application of a network visualization: http://www.technologyreview.com/view/512116/global-e-mail-patterns-reveal-clash-of-civilizations/

The researcher analyzed a database of 10M email messages, treating users as nodes and email communications as ties. He found that users are clustered in a way that reflects cultural schisms, and that this pattern of global email communication can be construed as support for Huntington’s Clash of Civilization’s theory of international relations.

The graph looks similar to what Gephi produces, so I was curious to see if Gephi is what was used. Looking up the original paper (http://arxiv.org/abs/1303.0045), it turns out the research used the igraph package in R instead.
